چکیده

The skyline operator has been studied in database research for multi-criteria decision making. Until now the focus has been on the e ciency or accuracy of single queries. In practice, however, users are increasingly confronted with unknown data collections, where precise query formulation proves di cult. Instead, users explore the data in a sequence of incrementally changing queries to the data to match their understanding of the data and task. In this work, we study the skyline operator as a tool in such exploratory querying both analytically and empirically. We show how its results evolve as users modify their queries, and suggest using our findings to guide users in formulating reasonable queries.

Efficient Skyline Computation over Ad-hoc Aggregations

Aggregation is among the core functionalities of OLAP systems. Frequently, such queries are issued in decision support systems to identify interesting groups of data. When more than one aggregation function is involved and the notion of interest is not clearly defined, skyline queries provide a robust mechanism to capture the potentially interesting points where (i) users do not need to specify...

Computing Continuous Skyline Queries without Discriminating between Static and Dynamic Attributes

Although most of the existing skyline queries algorithms focused basically on querying static points through static databases; with the expanding number of sensors, wireless communications and mobile applications, the demand for continuous skyline queries has increased. Unlike traditional skyline queries which only consider static attributes, continuous skyline queries include dynamic attribute...

Semi-Skyline Optimization of Constrained Skyline Queries

Skyline evaluation techniques (also known as Pareto preference queries) follow a common paradigm that eliminates data elements by finding other elements in a data set that dominate them. Nowadays already a variety of sophisticated skyline evaluation techniques are known, hence skylines are considered a well researched area. On the other hand, the skyline operator does not stand alone in databas...

Skyline Queries over Incomplete Multidimensional Database

In recent years, there has been much focus on skyline queries that incorporate and provide more flexible query operators that return data items which are dominating other data items in all attributes (dimensions). Several techniques for skyline have been proposed in the literature. Most of the existing skyline techniques aimed to find the skyline query results by supposing that the values of di...

Efficiently Evaluating Skyline Queries on RDF Databases

Skyline queries are a class of preference queries that compute the pareto-optimal tuples from a set of tuples and are valuable for multi-criteria decision making scenarios. While this problem has received significant attention in the context of single relational table, skyline queries over joins of multiple tables that are typical of storage models for RDF data has received much less attention....
